History

The school opened in 2007, by the beginning of the next year, its enrolment had grown to over 100. Today the school is heading towards an enrolment target of 275 students and around 30 staff. The student body comprises over 10 nationalities, with 65% coming from Australia and New Zealand. The school has a few Singaporean students attending the school, however the Singapore government's regulations prevent most of its citizens from attending international schools within the country. The average stay of a student is just over three years.

In early 2010, Mr. Andrew Coote was appointed as Head of Preparatory at Avondale Grammar School. Mr Coote was formerly the Head of Junior School at Ravenswood School for Girls, one of the top independent girl’s schools in Sydney, Australia. Mr Coote brings with him 29 years of teaching experience along with his strong leadership qualities to Avondale, at a dynamic period of growth for the school. The preceding principal Martin Tait, formerly of Masada College Sydney a co-educational Independent Jewish School in Sydney, who started his tenure in 2008, had seen a modernisation of the school, particularly in the realm of Information Technology, Literacy and Numeracy. Fran Hazell was Avondale's founding Principal when it first opened in 2007. The anticipated enrolment for the beginning of 2011 is 212 students.

Campus

The school's Phoenix Park campus is located in the central and convenient location of the Tanglin / Dempsey area. The school relocated from its former Toa Payoh campus in December 2009. The new campus boasts many improvements including spacious classrooms with new and improved technology, state of the art multi-purpose hall and in addition a well resourced library and brand new sporting facilities for the students to enjoy. The former Toa Payoh campus was also previously the 'Toa Payoh Girls' Home.

To compliment the curriculum, specialist areas are catered for with music, art, cooking, PE and ICT classrooms. Daily Mandarin / French lessons are also offered to Students.

Philosophy and Culture

The philosophy of Avondale Grammar School is as follows:

We believe that each child can reach their personal and academic potential if they are nurtured in a supportive environment. We believe a well-rounded education encourages children to develop independence, resilience, self-confidence and "a lifelong love of learning".

The School applies this philosophy through a culture which promotes and rewards both effort and enthusiasm for learning. Our programs encourage curiosity and the joy of discovery. We recognise each child’s progress along their own learning path relative to their individual goals.[3]
